The Labor Relations Specialist is responsible for union employee relations matters (e.g., discipline, investigations, etc.), CBA interpretation and for presenting the position of the company during arbitration or other labor negotiations.  The Labor Relations Specialist monitors the company’s unionized workforce and ensures adherence to labor agreements and provides best practices and guidance regarding union avoidance / risk assessment tools and/or strategies.  The Labor Relations Specialist is responsible for proper training of managers and supervisors on topics related to Labor Relations (e.g., working conditions, safety, equal opportunity, etc.) on an annual or bi-annual basis. The Labor Relations Specialist also monitors employee satisfaction with policies, working conditions, etc., and proactively reviews employer practices and employee data to ensure compliance with contract wages, hours and conditions of employment. The Labor Relations Specialist may recommend amendments to CBAs or seek clarification on contract terms,  and works closely with the Company’s vendor, legal department and outside counsel regarding union relationships, CBA strategy and negotiations.

What this job involves

  • Investigates alleged violations of Policy, including Title VII.
  • Conducts thorough investigations of complaints, which consists of interviewing complainants, witnesses and subject(s) and gathering evidence as necessary; prepares investigative reports with analysis, findings and recommended disciplinary or corrective actions.
  • Investigates labor relations problems and assists with the coordination of appropriate responses to satisfactory resolution; serves as a representative at hearings, grievances, and meetings regarding labor relations matters.
  • Consults with and advises HR/Managers and supervisors regarding adherence to collective bargaining agreements, as well as the responsibilities of management and employees with respect to discipline.
  • Determines the appropriateness of proposed disciplinary action to address employee misconduct,and oversees the disciplinary process to ensure compliance with policies, federal, state, and local laws and/or regulations.
  • Ensures compliance with collective bargaining agreements; may attend bargaining negotiations and researches issues arising out of the bargaining process.
  • Serves as the primary contact to respond to questions from staff and management regarding Americans with Disabilities Act (‘ADA’) compliance and accommodation requests. Evaluates, researches and administers employee requests for workplace accommodations. Facilitates and participates in the interactive process to identify and assess options for providing reasonable accommodations and access to eligible employees in accordance with the ADA and other disability laws.
  • Conducts training sessions on employment related matters, including discipline, policies, mandated work rules, EEO and Title VII, and compliance with collective bargaining agreements.
  • Prepares new or amended policies and procedures to respond to new laws and to ensure continued compliance with relevant laws, policies, and regulations.

  • Degree with a concentration in Labor Relations, Employee Relations, Human Resource Administration or similar field.
  • At least (3) three years of professional experience in labor relations, employee relations, or human resources administration preferred.
  • Must possess familiarity with employment laws and the ability to assess evidence and arrive at a fair conclusion in accordance with policies, work rules, and applicable laws.
  • Knowledge of research methods and techniques. Knowledge of the concepts of collective bargaining and the grievance process.
  • Must be able to work well with employees at all levels of the organization, including internal and external customers.
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to work well within a diverse environment with the ability to handle all situations with diplomacy, tact, and confidentiality.
  • Must possess the ability to prioritize work and to respond to customers' calls in a timely and courteous manner.
  • Must possess the ability to be self-directed and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Good organizational skills required.
  • Must be able to use personal computers and associated software including, but not limited to, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Access and Excel.
